PRODUCT DESIGN - EMERGING MARKETS - CAD MODELLING - PROTOTYPING

DESIGN BRIEF
After extensive research the (rural) Indian market was selected to develop a hand powered washing machine for the Danish company Vestergaard Franssen. The focus in this project was on product functionality and costs efficiency. With a potential market of 4.3 million products decisions on production, material and assembly were made to provide a quality product for a low price.
PROCESS
The market, industry and company analysis were applied in the design direction for the washing machine. Each member of the team created a detailed design of a part of the SpinWash including specific production method choices, price specification, CAD models and technical drawings. With a CNC milling cutter a foam mock-up was made on a 1:1 scale to enable user testing.
RESULTS
The SpinWash has economical, ecological and social benefits and is operated in the following way: By turning the handle, the dolly inside the washtub makes an alternating rotational movement while also moving in vertical direction. This way all the clothes in the tub are moved and washed properly. The SpinWash washing method decreases the washing cycle times and is more effective than traditional hand washing methods.
